FAMILY EQUALITY COUNCIL CONGRATULATES WASHINGTON STATE FAMILIES

Washington, D.C.  – (Feb. 13, 2012) – Family Equality Council,  the national organization that connects, supports, and represents the one million lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) parents raising two million children in the U.S., today issued a statement following the signing of a marriage equality bill by Washington Governor Chris Gregoire.

“Today is an important day not only for all Washington residents, but especially for the approximately 6,000 children in that state who are being raised by 2,998 parents who are LGBT,” said Family Equality Council Executive Director Jennifer Chrisler.  “Those kids can now take comfort knowing that their parents’ love and commitment to one another will be honored and that their families will be respected by the law.  Children understand fundamentally that marriage is the word society uses to describe the most important relationship two loving people can have and the children of Washington state can now proudly go to school, soccer practice and play dates knowing that their parents have the freedom to marry.”
