Jim Obergefell and Rick Hodges Come Together to Oppose Confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court

With Judge Barrett’s Nomination Many Worry about the Status of Marriage Equality

WHAT:

Jim Obergefell and Rick Hodges—the named plaintiff and defendant in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court case that granted marriage equality to same-sex couples in 2015—will join Family Equality and elected officials to discuss their opposition to the Senate confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.

Barrett’s nomination sparked concerns about the rightward tilt of the Court and its impact on LGBTQ+ people—specifically as it relates to full marriage equality, with all of its attendant rights and responsibilities, which a majority of Americans support, the employment nondiscrimination protections precedent set in Bostock, and the Affordable Care Act.

WHO:

  • Jim Obergefell, named plaintiff in Obergefell v. Hodges and Family Equality’s Director of Individual Giving
  • Rick Hodges, named defendant in Obergefell v. Hodges and former Director of the Ohio Department of Health
  • Senator Sherrod Brown
  • Senator Patty Murray
  • Senator Ron Wyden
  • Denise Brogan-Kator, Chief Policy Officer and CEO (Interim) of Family Equality
